My love of the Z came about when I was 15 years old and my dad handed me a flier for an auction of surplus vehicles for the City of Monroe. “Nissan 300ZX” was vaguely listed among all the useless junk, so I prodded around their website and found an absolutely gorgeous silver sportscar that was calling my name. It was seized from a man with an ounce of cocaine and a pistol under the seat, and was used as an undercover police car until it was “burnt,” or recognizable. We showed up at the auction JUST as the gavel dropped on the only beautiful car I was going to have a chance to own at that age. The winning bid was $2250. We offered the buyer $500 more and he accepted, but drove off while my dad was gone to get the cash! Coincidentally, my dad met him on the road while returning with the cash, and flashed him over. They talked, and the man had decided that he would keep the car. Just in case, they exchanged phone numbers, but I was still left heartbroken and surely destined for a Civic or another typical teenage ricer ride. To ice the cake, we left the auction to go to a car show, and the first thing we saw was a bright red twin turbo Z that was so shiny it couldn’t be looked at directly without sunglasses—it was absolutely gorgeous!
A week or so went by when the phone rang, and my dad passed the news along that the man had decided to sell us the car after all! I came home from school to a car sexier than I’d ever dreamed of having for a first ride. I’d never driven a manual, but Dad told me to get in and drive it down our neighborhood road. My sister and I jumped in and, though I ground a few gears, I caught on quickly! I must’ve paced that ¼ mile stretch of road a hundred times patiently waiting for an opportunity to drive it on the road for real! The rest is history. The Z fever caught on like wildfire, and it’s now securely in the blood. She’s come amazingly far, and my miniscule bank account proves it! I’m exceptionally proud that the car has never let me down except for a clutch and a battery and is still cruising strong at 173,000 miles! My biggest frustration would have to be the fact that it’s slower than most everything on the road nowadays, which leaves me yearning for something faster. But for a daily driver, this thing is reliable and great looking! Long live the Z car!
